There are 3 different ways to upgrade a 56K Flex modem. The brand and model of your modem will determine what steps will be required to upgrade to V.90. The first and simplest way to upgrade to V.90 is with a new modem driver. Unfortunately, most modems cannot be upgraded this way. The second and most common way is a flash ROM upgrade. This method will write the new V.90 code to your modem's flash ROM. Care must be taken to select the correct flash for your modem. Failure to use the correct flash may make your modem malfunction, or stop working entirely! The third and least common method requires you to send your modem back to the manufacturer so they can put a new V.90 compliant chip on the modem. Very few modems should require this. How do you tell if you need an upgrade? Follow the simple instructions on the next page to determine if you are already V.90 compliant.
